WHERE IS SPRING?

There is a bit of a lull in blogland at the moment,  my usual bloggers seem to be resting and rather uninspired.  I am no different.  I blame the lack of spring weather.  All I want to do is sit indoors.  It is just too cold to go out.  Talking to my son in Birmingham this morning he described snow flurries and cold winds.

Traditionally on Good Friday, our extended family go “egg rolling” up a local high point, Holcombe hill.  After  the difficult climb up the hill, the children roll painted hard boiled eggs down the hill and whoever gets furthest with an intact egg is the winner.  We then all go back to my stepdaughter, Fashionista’s, house for pasties and mushy peas.

Initially I had declined the invitation of the hill climb and said I would met them at the house, but I awoke on Good Friday and the sun was shining, so I decided, life was too short, I would wrap up warm and join the egg rolling ritual.

I am so glad I did as I thoroughly enjoyed the fresh air and exercise  the biting, chill wind had dropped for the morning and it was actually rather pleasant.   This gave me hope that the spring WILL arrive.  I had a horrible feeling we would go through to September and the winter would start all over again.

So here are some pictures from the  climb.  I know they are similar to last year but hey, this is the record of my life!

Bit of cheating going on here with an egg wrapped in silver foil!

Fancy living on the top of the hill like this!.  Talking to the lady behind the counter I found she walked up and down the hill most days to go to work!

So a good day was had by all.

Those pasties and peas tasted so good  when we finally got to them.

Love Denise.

A year ago I was having afternoon tea in London.

  1. It’s hard to believe I used to moan about the cold … But after our sixth month of summer I am over it …. Would love to be all wrapped up …. You just can’t please some people !! Xx

    • LOl Megan!. You are right, but you know us Brits. We just love to talk about the weather….and yes moan! too hot! to cold! too wet!

Having said that it is strange how we are subconsciously affected by the seasons. Everybody is in a waiting mood, as if we can’t go out properly till spring gives us that permission. Once spring is “here” we can all go out and DO things!

  2. I’ve just realised that is the same hill David and I climbed one cold, sunny, windy day last year. It was the first time we took the tram to Bury and then bus to Ramsbottom before climbing up to the Holcombe tower. Breathtaking views, we really enjoyed it.

Yesterday we took a trip to Etherow Country Park near Marple. It was cold in the wind but a beautiful walk and we were really pleased we made the effort. Of course you are quite a bit further north than we are so it is probably colder for you.

I wish spring would hurry up and start properly. None of the daffodils me and my neighbours planted on the playing field behind our houses as a Marie Curie Field of Hope have flowered at all, it’s very disappointing.

  3. Denise, I loved this post! It reminded me that real life goes on around us while we wish away our days waiting for our next trip. Enjoying family on a beautiful crisp spring day is what it’s all about! Thanks for sharing and hope you had a wonderful Easter with your family. I can’t wait for the warm weather to get here too!

  4. I just got back into town and was so hoping that it would be warmer, after all it IS April, but alas, it’s not. The rest of the week looks rather chilly as well, but at least the sun is shining. I hope you had a lovely Easter with your family.

So who won the egg roll?

  5. Welcome back to Europe Ella. The weeks are passing quickly towards your wedding.
Tomboy, the grandaughter with the egg wrapped in foil got to the bottom with the egg intact, but I don’t know if it counts. As the others had used different cheats like nail varnish and even floor varnish, we couldn’t disqualify her!
