Did I ever mention that Danny Boyle, the film director organiser of last nights spectacular Olympic opening ceremony, was brought up around two miles from here AND he went to Michaels sons school. My claim to fame! LOL!
So many famous sons seem to have been born around here.
The ceremony, which detailed the history of Britain from the industrial revolution to the present, was very in keeping with Danny’s northern, working class heritage plus what he does best..films….it was quirky, eccentric and entirely British… and kept me enthralled for nearly four hours.
From “Jerusalem” (which I love, shades of school assemblies) to rap, the music to me reflected the multicultural and multi class culture we have in this country
What an imagination Danny Boyle must have and how talented the people who actually put Danny’s fantasies into reality. The whole thing was amazing.
My favourite bits were the simple Mr Bean pulling faces to “Chariots of Fire” and the Queen, appearing to parachute into the stadium with James Bond, showing that the Queen is also not above a bit of fun!.. even if her frilly pink dress and feather in the hair were questionable
As a taxpayer, I realise thatthis spectacular is costing me a fortune, so I might as well join in and enjoy it!
Of course there has to be critics. The MP Aiden Burley ( who has ever heard of him before?) described it as leftie multicultural crap. I can’t agree with him, but he is entitled to his opinion.

Love Denise

We also watched the ceremony last night – quite the spectacular event!! I especially enjoyed the first 30 minutes – was really something when they changed the set from working farm field hands to the industrial era – how in the world did they pull that off with all the smoke stacks rising up from the floor!! Also liked how they "forged" the olympic rings and then they were raised in the air – not sure what was raining down from them but it was beautiful and I really liked it! And of course I loved the part where James Bond went to the palace to bring Her Majesty to open the games – those little corgies are darling – and we all kenw that the Queen jumping out of the helicopter was not real but it was funny – glad to know that she has a sense of humor! Quite an entertaining evening and we enjoyed watching – you should be proud of the job they did!

Your photos are great Denise. We only managed to watch a bit of the opening ceremony in Paris. We were out and when we got back it took a while to find the French TV channel showing it. Must admit I fell asleep while the teams were coming in! I have seen some photos of the fireworks though as my son watched them from his bedroom window and emailed me his pics.
