“Britsih Cycling and SKY have come together to get a million more people riding their bikes regularly-and everyone’s invited. Whatever your age or ability and whatever kind of bike you ride. From big traffic free events in towns and cities, to local neighbourhood rides; from women only bike rides and support, to routes and workshops; there’s something for everyone.”
So Sunday morning 10.00h saw me joining 19 other people for a free leisurely 7 mile ride.
I was presented with my very own yellow tabard, to keep.
The people varied from Melissa, an obvious veteran at eight ,to probably myself and a couple who were about the same age. There was also a family with a child trailer, where young George sat on the back. A brilliant way to get George used to cycling before his stableiser have been removed.
First we were shown how to check our bikes for safety before setting off on the route which took us to parts of Bolton I did not know existed. Along rivers and through parks, in a circular tour which also took in Firwood Fold. The quaint old hamlet where Samuel Crompton, the inventor of the spinning Jenny and father of the industrial revolution lived 230 years ago.
safety check first.
Even though I am a regular cyclists, I learned a lot from these well trained guys and the ride was very well organised and friendly. Ther were four marshalls who helped us along and kept us safe. There are all sorts of rides for all kinds of abilities. All credit to SKY, who provide the funds and British Cycling who provide the marshalls.
Melissa, a seasoned veteran.
Lots of instruction and guidance.
We stopped for a while at firwood Fold.

It seemed only fitting that my first skyride should be done on the day that British cyclists Bradley Wiggins won the tour de France and Mark Cavendish spirited up the Champs Elysees to win the final sprint.
I went home and watched the wonderful pictures of Paris on TV and cheered on the amazing Marc Cavendish to cross the finish line.
So proud to be British today!
Love from Bolton.
