Paris day trips. Medieval city. / Provins

(Paris day eight)"AS GOOD AS DISNEYLAND, MUM",… PROVINS.

Sitting, relaxing,  in the square of the medieval city of Provins, I overhear a young British boy saying this to his mum!
The scene is idylic, the weather is perfect, we sit under a tree in the shade with some jazzy music playing.  Not  too crowded, a perfect day out.
Provins is full of history, which I love. A walled city  on a hill, with ramparts to walk around and a tower to climb. Strategically Provins was a useful place to survey the surrounding countryside. The stunning views form the top of the tower are well worth the climb.

There have always been trade fairs in Provins, people have brought goods from all over the world on trade routes to sell and of course it was an important  home of Champagne and Brie fairs. The museum in the town details all this.
Today it is a world heritage site, which exploits it’s tourist attraction.  There were people walking about in medieval costume and a bird of prey display.
We caught the little train that goes around the town to listen to the commentary and give our feet a rest.

The main square is surrounded by cafes and restaurants.  We ate in Fleur de Sel, a creperie where we shared a traditional crepe with tripe sausage, bacon chops and filled with mustard sauce and potatoes. Sound revolting, but was actually rather good.
The lower, more modern , (although this is also very old) town of  Provins is also very interesting., with nice shops and a very interesting church.

Must be the smallest cinema in the world!

Looking much happier than in Estonia!
Couldn’t resist this great wedding car

Very interesting church.

Unfortunately we were stopped by a downpour and had to get back to catch the return train to Paris.  Sorry to miss the evening festival.  Maybe next time we will stay overnight. The next evening festival is August 4th.
Provins is 1hr 25mins from the gare d’Est .  Go to the ticket office near platform 16 and  get a day mobilis pass which costs around 14 euro.

  3. Hi NYCgirl, you have a good memory! Yes Lizzie and I had a day trip to Provins last year. We panicked and got off the train when it turns round and goes back on it'self. WE were then given a lift in a car by a very kind but mad French woman who just wanted to practise her English! Then we got trapped in the same cafe "Fleur de Sel!" by a torrential thunderstorm! This time Michael and I entered by the town from the station end and I saw even more of the place. When are you coming back to Paris?Love Denise
