Estonia. day trips

UNFORTUNATLY PARNU WAS CLOSED!(day eight)

The rolling flat Estonian countryside stretches out endlessly at the side of the express Tallinn to Pardu bus.  No mountains on the horizon, just flat fields of golden crop interspersed with trees.  There are few cars on the long straight road.  Wooden houses with steep pitched roofs occasionally break the landscape and carpets of the yellow flowers gleam in the sunshine.  Wooden logs lie in careful piles by the roadside.

We are lucky with the weather. It is warm and sunny . Predicted 19 degrees today.  There does not seem to be much breeze.  Just the day for a trip to the seaside  The vast sky is blue with small wisps of white cloud.
The bus trundles along at a sedate pace, probably no more than 60 mph and I doze.  Thr journey takes 1hour 50 minutes and cost 7.50 euro each way.  Later I discovered it is a lot cheaper during the week with a 30% discount for pensioners.
The journey passes quickly and we arrive at Pardu around 11.50h. As we find our way to the main street and the tourist information Pardu, is  a deserted place on a Sunday,  it reminds me of  one of those  towns in cowboy films and I almost expect to see tumble weed blowing down the street.

The lady in the tourist information Is very apologetic and tells us we should have come yeserday as there were “festivals” .
She gives us a map and points the way to the beach which is a pleasant 15 minute walk through a green park.
Past a stunning Russian Orthadox church, but I am a bit intimidated by the “Ladies” so could only take a picture from the door
I also see some interesting street art.  I find this in the most unusual places.

The beach is like finding a 1930’s retro scene and very much reminds me of Deauville in France.  The fashionable beach where the beautiful people hang out..  The locals have walked or cycled here and there are lots of families about.

Except one, all the beachside bars are closed because , the barmaid tells us ” summer doesn’t start till June”
Then we spot the wonderful Art Deco Building which is the Scandic RANNAHOTEL Parnu.
This hotel, built in the thirties was once THE place to go and be seen.  The president of Estonia once had a private suite here.  Now it has been beautifully restored.

view from the terrace

We sat and have  a delicious and inexpensive lunch on the terrace, before we wander back through the town past lovely wooden houses, again reminding me of Deauville without the OCD pristiness..

We catch the six o’clock bus back to Tallin.
But unfortunately our trip was about to go down hill!
Love Denise
